INTRODUCTION

-haiku ireland- was set up in 2004 by a group of haiku poets based in Ireland who share the same aims and accept the operating rules.

Membership is open to any persons who share our aims. Members are not required to be based in Ireland. See Join Uspage for more information.

-haiku ireland- organises regular haiku events such as ginko, workshops, haiku readings on-line activities and other events relating to haiku.

-Any member may send up to 4 haiku

-All haiku are collated and sent to all members for vote

-Votes: 5 pts for the 1st, 3 pts for 2nd and 1pt for the 3rd

-Members can vote even if they have not submitted any haiku

-No member is allowed to vote for his/her haiku

-Each voting member is also invited to comment on his/her first choice and to discuss one haiku (or more).

Aims

AIMS

- To foster the writing of haiku and its related forms to a standard of excellence and in a manner which reflects both its origins and best contemporary practice. To this end -haiku ireland- adheres to haiku guidelines similar to those adopted by haiku societies internationally, while welcoming diversity of style and content.

- To promote an appreciation of the place of haiku and its related forms within the broader literary world, and in the public consciousness.

- To contribute to the development of haiku in Ireland and internationally.

- To develop and sponsor cooperation between the Irish and the international haiku community (including other haiku associations).

- To offer membership to any persons who share our aims.

Turnings, a first selection of his poems, was published in 1999. After a career spent largely in Brussels, he returned to Dublin as a writer in 2001. One of his poems won the 2003 Francis Ledwidge Award and he was selected to read work in the 2005 Poetry Ireland Introductions Series. His keen visual appreciation and good humour are never far away and he is currently interested in the haiku form and in the relationships between poetry and film images. Neville Keery's latest collection that includes haiku, HOME (poems 1999-2006), was published in 2007 by Hinds Publishing and The Blackrock Society.

One of the purposes of prayer is to enable us to become more aware of God, ourselves and our world. In a state of perfect awareness everything would be understood. Like stepping stones across a stream, the haiku offer a foot-hold in the flux of time, and a pointer to God, the ultimate reality.

In the suburbs: low houses, streets luminous with rain, a wave of cloud tumbling down the mountains. The citys three volcanoes seem to watch us through the window as we drink imported whisky out of small tumblers and listen to Don Jesus talk, his eyes bright with recollection. He tells us how his uncles, still tall in his memory after eighty years, had travelled the high dunes road from Mollendo that day of the maremoto, their mules laden with contraband spirits. As he tells it, the path winds along the top of the dunes, the three brothers ride, and the sea crawls at their feet. They reach the village by the rivers mouth; the path skirts it, high above the beach. Their own house lies over on the flat land beyond. Mother, they can see, is standing in the patio pointing at the sky over the dunes, inland. She is shouting something they are just too far away to hear. They turn and look behind them. A vast cloud of red dust has climbed from nowhere into the sky above the desert and is glowing out the sun. The uncles spur the mules on, straining to catch their mothers words. and then the ground roars such as to make sand run, earth fall and rocks flow from the mules hooves. And the sea the brothers look towards the beach but the sea has quietly taken its leave. There are acres of wet sand stretching away, small boats laid suddenly among kelp, stones and fish alive with seagulls, the beach become a plain. This haiku presentsa magnificent large view of nature in two words, grand canyon, and then focuses on a tiny individual red ant in two more; finally it conveys the whole journey and calamitous demise of the hapless critter in half a word, imaging precisely the action occurring. If haikuvalues sparse wording, this is an amazing example. To top it all off, the impermanenceof the ant's life draws the mind to the impermanence of the ever-eroding canyon that appears so solid.I liked No 22 for the wonderful use of opposites, from the vastness of the Grand Canyon to the speck of the red ant, and the further suggestion of it disappearing over the edge with just the use of half a word. The colours were also strong, as we are invited to see the huge amber cragginess of a place like the Grand Canyon and then for our eye to pick out a speck of red going over the side. There is also that element of pending danger, as to what might happen this tiny bug once it disappears into the endless ravine. Also, the economy was very fine, so few words which said so much.Haiku #2 (autumn chill) does what (to me) is what haiku, especially, can do: moving a local literal event (cutting down the shade tree) into whatoverlaps anunquantifiable (cutting shade): something capable of being seen with bodily eyes is spoken of, at the same time, in terms ofan aspect 'see-able' only in mind's eye: "haiku mind" is thus achieved.I gave 5 points to Haiku 9 (her song tonight) for capturing most succinctly a pleasure I recognise.her song tonight:the girlish voicebelying 96 yearsWhy I gave 5 points to HAIKU #20 (leaning over cars):leaning over carswillows in a parking lotdream of the riverIt is a political poem. It as a keen observation poem. It is applicable to the whole Germanized world of the Northern hemisphere. It is not a half-truth, it is truth.The only flaw is saying that they dream of the river. Too sweet. As a two-liner it is perfect.I gave five points to N. 4 (pink leaves quiver in a breath of sunlight) because of its simplicity, colour, the beauty of the image it presents.Why I gave 5 points to: HAIKU #35 (suicide burial):This is an arresting Haiku. I think its partly because I have been so affected by people I know taking their own lives that it immediately resonates with me. A suicide is so sudden, so brutal and so devastating to the lives of the people left behind- its affect lasting generations. It has a destructive potency which is bewildering in what it brings up and brings out in the family, friends and associates of the person who was in such pain that the only possibility of survival is to end it all. We all know someone who has killed themselves in the past months whether its someone close or some well known member of the community. So the fear hangs over us all. Of course how we are influenced by this fear is personal and indeed depends on our spirituality and attitude. The Haiku is simple and clear. The friendly winter robin song is a touch of happiness a familiar symbol of cheer. It being louder as the dead person is laid to rest heightens the poignancy of this burial. It also makes me think of how deep the sadness is at the burial of someone who has killed themselves. The song being louder sharpens this feeling or the sound seemed louder because of the feeling.Why I gave 5 points to: HAIKU #14 (from over the wall):I love the way this sound is captured, as it's a sound that's very familiar to me. It does not reveal if it is adults or children, which makes it more interesting. Why I gave 5 points to: HAIKU #26 (mirrored in the pond):I gave this haiku top marks because its core image stayed with me the longest and most strongly between the time I first read it and the time I had to vote. And yet that image was a 'shifting' one, to use the word that was aptly applied in the haiku itself. It shows the reader something which is impermanent and somewhat intangible, a little like life itself! To me that chimes very well with Buddhist concepts of intransience and is part of the haiku's appeal. It also raises a few questions: Is the face in the pond the poet's? Is it male or female? Young or old? You know, it doesn't really matter. Even though haiku can and should - often contain microscopic detail, a more nebulous poem such as this one can also have its charms.Why I gave 5 points to: HAIKU #30 (nursing home)I gave five pointsfor this one as I thought it was the best in the list and one the best I have read lately. It is the simple "account" of a description and the moment (and emotion) is there because of the reader's take/perception of it.It has been said many times that haiku should not tell nor show but give a lead and let the reader feel/experience. I think this one is a perfect example. Yes, it gives the whole description but does not tell us who, why, what to think....REVIEWSMy review for Haiku #4 (pink leaves quiver in a breath of sunlight):This haikuish phrase may serve as an example of the haiku-like images in the hypertext of prose and poetry. It is also an exercise in the stretching of the English language BREATH OF SUNLIGHT (GLANCE OF THE WIND, etc,). The whole model of the language may be developed but I have a feeling that such model has been already researched.Haiku No 7 (a lone daffodil). Would the poet consider the following:behind the rose busha lone daffodilMarch windHaiku No. 28 (brown baby hedgehog) Would the poet consider the following:lulled to sleep by the (*** ) river ** add a descriptive in here?baby HedgehogHaiku No 10 (mother childlike now). Please take all of the above with a grain of salt!My review for haiku No. 10:I like this haiku for its sadness. Also, the visual image was easily entered. I am wondering whether the insertion of the author ("watching my") strengthens the haiku or weakens it. On the one hand, "watching "hints at a mood of reverie that invites the reader to reflect. On the other, does the "my" keep the reader from identifying with the experience as her own? I am not sure. Taking out the personal reference would leave: snow laden windwatching footprints vanishone at a timeIn any case, I found this to be a haiku rich in wabi-sabi.My review for Haiku # 22 (grand canyon):I don't feel qualified or confident enough to enter a line like tha'...... as a haiku, never mind debate its pros and cons. However it made me smile, esp. the last line My review for Haiku # 24 (breaking through):I really like this one as it reminded me immediately of a wall I used to pass. It's a graveyard wall and it has bursts of those pink flowers coming through the concrete. I actually think they're weeds, but I love them. The writer does not say what the pink is, which makes it more interesting!My review for Haiku #36:seagull with a fishsoars upward over Dublinfrom Moore Street marketThere is a moment (and a description) but somehow it's too wordy, or clumsy in its construction. It also incorporates 2 "proper nouns" information (Dublin + Moore Street market). Usually, the insertion of such information must be precisely analysed and assessed. Is the information really relevant, vital for the reader?
